Food data attribution and licences

Tembilo · Effective: 17 October 2026

The app's Policies and licences page provides offline document selection. The website links below require internet access.

Food composition values are for reference, not dietary, nutrition or medical advice. Each food's source must be retained. The built-in sources are FSANZ AFCD Release 3 and USDA FoodData Central, maintained as separate datasets. New Open Food Facts lookups require internet access; saved snapshots can be reused offline as explained below. No AUSNUT dataset is included.

FSANZ Australian Food Composition Database — Release 3

© Food Standards Australia New Zealand. Australian Food Composition Database (AFCD), Release 3. Source: AFCD; official data files.

The AFCD-derived subset is licensed under the FSANZ Data User Licence Agreement. This is FSANZ's specific agreement, based on CC BY-SA 3.0 Australia, not a substitution of the standard CC BY-SA licence. The same FSANZ agreement applies to our AFCD adaptations (§4B(a)).

Changes by Yu Lu for Tembilo: selection of a subset, conversion to app-readable files and search fields, Chinese translations and serving/unit conversions. These are our adaptations, not FSANZ's official translations or endorsement. Translation review status and estimated serving information accompany the relevant records; machine translation is not a claim of human review. Nutrient values retain their source provenance. FSANZ has not endorsed this app. FSANZ's logo and the Commonwealth coat of arms are not licensed for our use (§4C(g)).

Limitation of Data Statement — official English text

There are limitations associated with food composition databases. Food composition data used in the database or databases may represent an average of the nutrient content of a particular sample of foods and ingredients, determined at a particular time. The nutrient composition of foods and ingredients can vary substantially between batches and brands because of a number of factors, including changes in season, processing practices and ingredient source, and methods of calculation.

Australian applicability statement: This work is based on Australian data. Australian data may not be appropriate for use in other countries.

The statement above is reproduced as the notice required by the FSANZ agreement §1 and §4A(b). FSANZ supplies the data as-is, with the disclaimers and limits in §§5, 7 and 8 of that agreement, subject to applicable non-excludable law. Keep the original copyright, licence and warranty notices with each copy.

Rights and copies

The AFCD subset and our adaptations are provided under the FSANZ Data User Licence Agreement. The app's Food sources and licences area offers a free, account-free export of the original afcd.json text and LICENSE-AFCD.md, separate from private diary exports. Contact [email protected] if you cannot obtain a copy.

AFCD is provided under the FSANZ agreement above, USDA FoodData Central under CC0 1.0, and OFF database/content under ODbL 1.0/DbCL 1.0 respectively. This developer's app-use restrictions do not apply to data rights separately granted by those licences. This statement does not amend Apple or other third-party terms or represent FSANZ approval of store distribution or technical measures. Redistribution must retain the original copyright, change, licence and data-limitation notices and comply with the relevant licence.

When redistributing the AFCD material, include the Limitation of Data Statement, Australian applicability statement, copyright and change notices, and a copy of or link to the FSANZ agreement with every copy. A website-only acknowledgement or a general data disclaimer does not replace these notices. No additional contractual or technical restriction may prevent recipients exercising the agreement's rights (§4A(c), (f)).

USDA FoodData Central

Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service — FoodData Central. Official database and licensing; data documentation.

USDA states that FoodData Central data is in the public domain and provides it under CC0 1.0 Universal. We acknowledge USDA as requested. The supplement is kept separate from AFCD; selected records may have Chinese translations, search fields and unit conversions added by Yu Lu.

The shipped provenance identifies the USDA supplement as selected from FoodData Central's FNDDS 2021–2023, with release-file date 31 October 2024 and project access date 7 October 2026. Selected records, original identifiers, download links and checksums accompany the data export. Chinese names and aliases are project machine translations awaiting human review; US reference recipes and portions do not establish the composition of current Australian products. These dates are not nutrient-measurement dates.

CC0 does not grant trademark or patent rights or guarantee accuracy or clear other third-party rights (CC0 §4). U.S. products and serving conventions may differ from Australian ones. No USDA or brand endorsement is implied.

Open Food Facts

Food data: Open Food Facts contributors. Open Food Facts database: Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0; individual database contents: Database Contents Licence (DbCL) 1.0.

Barcode results must display “Food data: Open Food Facts contributors · ODbL” next to the reused data, with links to the specific product page and ODbL. This central page does not replace that adjacent attribution. Copies or exports containing reused OFF data must preserve source and licence notices. Data may be incomplete or wrong; verify the current label. OFF's service and data are for reference only.

New OFF lookups require internet access. The app does not bundle an OFF product database or maintain a separate offline product cache. Saved diary entries, recent items and favourites retain selected food names, values, barcodes and provenance locally for offline reuse. These are saved snapshots and are not automatically refreshed online. Reuse and exports retain OFF contributor attribution, product links and the original licence notices. The app does not automatically publish or upload your private diary to satisfy an open-data licence; when you choose to share files, consider the privacy of personal content and the licences of any third-party product data they contain.

OFF's database, individual contents and images have separate licences; retain the original licence notices listed here and adjacent source attribution. This app does not use OFF images. Under OFF's current terms, reuse remains subject to attribution and the relevant licence conditions. A private record does not automatically become public because it refers to product data; cumulative extraction, mixed exports and separate public redistribution must be assessed according to their content and use, not only table separation or filenames. Do not merge OFF product data into AFCD's differently licensed derivative database. Refer to OFF's current governing French terms; the English translation does not replace them.

OFF product photographs are under a separate image licence (CC BY-SA) and may contain third-party packaging rights. This release does not use OFF images, packaging artwork or logos; ODbL alone would not license them. Redistributed copies must respect the restriction on additional terms and technical measures in ODbL §4.7.
